Planning a Commercial Video Wall: A General Contractor's Pre-Wire Checklist
A clean video wall install starts long before the displays arrive. Here's the low-voltage pre-wire checklist we use with GCs on commercial builds across Eastern NC.
The difference between a video wall that looks factory-finished and one that fights you for years is decided during rough-in. As a low-voltage integrator that works alongside general contractors, here's the pre-wire checklist we walk through before a single display is hung.
1. Confirm the wall structure and mounting plan
Video walls are heavy and unforgiving of flex. We coordinate blocking, backing, and structural support with the GC early so the mounting system lands on solid framing — not just drywall and hope.
2. Rough in power and low-voltage together
Displays need conditioned power at the right locations, and the AV signal needs its own pathways. Pulling both during rough-in — with dedicated conduit or raceway behind the wall — keeps cabling concealed and serviceable.
3. Plan the headend and matrix routing
Multi-display environments run on HDMI/IP matrix routing from a central rack. We document source counts, zones, and control points up front so the headend rack is sized correctly and every display can show any source on demand.
4. Design for heat and access
Racks and displays generate heat. We plan ventilation and leave service access so the system stays reliable and maintainable in high-traffic commercial spaces like sports bars, funeral homes, corporate lobbies, and retail floors.
5. Label, document, and test
Every termination gets labeled and every run gets documented with single-line diagrams. That documentation is what makes future changes fast and inspections painless.
